Make this a "Christmas to Remember"...

The Garnett community is ramping up for a festive holiday weekend. As families gather for the Thanksgiving holiday, the citizens of Garnett are putting the final touches on “A Christmas to Remember”.

Area businesses are busy putting on the Ritz, as the chamber of commerce holds its first holiday window decorating contest. Judging will be held November 23rd with chamber bucks awarded to the top 3 finalists. Walk off that pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving by taking a stroll around Garnett’s town square and Prairie Spirit Trail and judge for yourself as you window shop.

Those looking for a day trip can enjoy a full day of great food, fun activities and nostalgia by spending the day in Garnett on Saturday, November 28th. Start the day at the Community Breakfast. This breakfast is priced right (freewill donation) and includes your choice of pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, eggs, juice and coffee. The Community Breakfast supports the Little Peoples Learning Center, a non-profit daycare, and is held at the First United Methodist Church, 205 S. Oak, from 7 to 9 a.m.

Next, tour the Holiday Craft Show & Bierock Sale at St. Rose School, 520 E. 4thin Garnett. Vendors scheduled for exhibition at the craft show are from Lenexa, Bremen, Overland Park, Louisburg, and Baldwin, as well as from the local area of Westphalia, Richmond and Garnett. Be sure to take home some freshly baked bierocks and cinnamon rolls, while supplies last. The craft show is a fund-raiser that supports St. Rose Catholic School.

“Soup’s On!” beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Garnett Fire Station. Enjoy all-you-can-eat chili, vegetable or potato soup, relishes and homemade cake served in the truck bay of the fire station by the volunteer firefighters. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Proceeds of the Garnett Fire Department Chili & Soup Supper help with the purchase of firefighting equipment. The fire station is the place to get warm and take pleasure in a hot meal before or after the parade.

The Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce presents the 39th annual Christmas Parade and Lighting Ceremony on “The Square” beginning at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme, “A Christmas to Remember”, was the winning submission by Jake Morgan, student at Garnett Elementary Center. As the winner of the Name the Christmas Parade Contest, Jake will join Santa for a ride on a fire truck in the parade. Countdown with the ceremony’s emcee to the illumination of the city’s lights at 6:30 p.m. followed by the start of the parade of marching bands and lighted floats.

Following the parade, meet Santa at the Santa Fe Depot, 7th & Main. Visit the decorated depot with miniature trains on display. Bring your kids and your camera for pictures with Santa.
